Roger V Berrett OH 1971-1975
Sunday 12 June 2022
After leaving school Roger went to Harpar Adams Agricultural College and then worked for a potato merchant. After a spell in the Royal Engineers he settled in the Scottish borders with Rosemary, a teacher from Edinburgh. He worked as a seed rep, and for a while ran his own seeds business. He then returned to potatos, eventually acting for a consortium of farmers supplying major supermarkets and the likes of Baxters. Unfortunately "Rog" inherited a rare condition known as Von Hippel Landau's syndrome and gradually over the last 30 years faced an increasing number of health issues. Anyone who remembers him from school will know he was fun-loving character with a great sense of humour and a real zest for life. He played rugby at school, hockey later on, skied, and tended his allotment. He enjoyed trips to Murrayfield as an England fan amongst Scottish friends (provided we won of course) and was even seen on occasion on a curling rink. Only in the last 5 years was he restricted in what he could do - he was effectively in lockdown a couple of years before the rest of us. The various problems he'd faced, and medications he'd taken, left his immune system seriously weakened and he was unable to resist infections that set in early this year. He died on June 12th aged only 63. He leaves his widow Rosemary and 3 grown-up children. He was a brilliant brother, dad, and uncle to my daughter, and we all miss him terribly. The last piece played at his funeral was "Always look on the bright side of life", which summed him up perfectly. Regards, Keith Berrett (69-72)
